Radagast the Brown, on sleigh.

Radagast the Brown, one of the five Istari, and a wonderfully characterful friend and ally to Gandalf the Grey.

This was my entry for the "Comedic" Bonus theme round of the Painting Challenge...

Radagast's portrayal by Sylvestor McCoy was simply inspired I thought. Certainly not how I first imagined him, but a brilliant rendition none the less.

He brought drama, and also a slight comic relief, to the grim tale of the dwarves of the Company of Thorin Oakenshield in their Quest for the Lonely Mountain, in The Hobbit.

Seeing him scampering about on foot was wonderful... but then to see his transport, was a bewilderment!

When I first heard the rumors before the movies release, I shook my head in disbelief... but as soon as I saw it in the movie... it just worked! Hilarious, fun, inspired, novel. Great stuff...

It quickly became one of those must have models upon its release... not that I envisage using it in every LOTR game I play, even if it is remarkably effective on the table top!

The model itself is a 28mm scale multipart Finecast resin kit, from GW, and took some trimming, and greenstuffing to have it ready to paint. I decided to paint the component parts, then assemble the the whole and base it at the end. It would have been just too awkward to do otherwise.

The minor niggle I have is that some of the rabbits have the void between them and the next rabbit in the line, filled... I trimmed away as much of this as I could, but for a couple of the connections it was just a necessity to leave them as is, as with just the sides reigns joining otherwise, they would not have been strong enough to support the model. But if you can see past these minor effects its a great model :)

It is mounted on a large oval base, that lends itself to a little diorama work in its own right, and the kit includes two small side features; broken tree stumps, one with a small spider at the base, the other with a bird, looking startled into flight as Radagast zooms past, to add to the overall effect.

The bird I decided to simply paint black with a little dark grey drybrush to represent a Raven as these birds are mentioned throughout the tale, so it seemed appropriate to use. The thrush is also in the tale, but the bird on the model looked far too big to be a thrush.

So there you have it...my Comedic bonus round entry... if a nutty old wizard riding a sleigh through the woods pulled by giant rabbits doesn't make you grin, nothing will!

Radagast the Brown on Sleigh - WIP

Well my last few nights hobby work and I have finally got this put together...

Its a Resin kit, and needed the usual trimming and scraping and bubble holes filling. Thankfully there weren't too many of these and none in any critical areas.

It's been a bit of a mission to assemble it... the front end on the sleigh required all three sleigh pieces to be heated in hot water and bent to shape. Much trial and error and tweaking and reheating until things worked out.

Radagast himself was in two pieces; main body, and cloak with right-arm, which was not too bad to glue together and the parts lined up well.

The side little terrain bits were easy to trim and assemble...

Of course the last bits were working out how the rabbits went together. There's 4 strands of them which again were a bit of trial and error to see which combos would be the best fit.

I had to trim some pieces of resin from the sprue to shape to join the reigns between each two strands. Fiddly work but its worked out OK, and the joints have then been concealed with a smear of liquid greenstuff over the top.

So finally assembled and ready to be primed. It will be joining my entries for the Analogue Hobbies painting challenge and I feel will make a great entry in the 'comedic' category... :)

Radagast the Brown

Radagast the Brown...

Found this fansite movie transcript, via TheOneRing.net... I love this scene... its the best put down one liner I have ever heard! ;-)

[The Company rides their ponies through a muddy forest as it rains. They all look cold, wet, and miserable.]

[Dori:] “Here, Mr. Gandalf, can’t you do something about this deluge?”

[Gandalf:] “It is raining, Master Dwarf, and it will continue to rain until the rain is done. If you wish to change the weather of the world, you should find yourself another wizard.”

[Bilbo:] “Are there any?”

[Gandalf:] “What?”

[Bilbo:] “Other wizards?”

[Gandalf:] “There are five of us. The greatest of our order is Saruman, the White. Then there are the two Blue Wizards; you know, I’ve quite forgotten their names.”

[Bilbo:] “And who is the fifth?”

[Gandalf:] “Well, that would be Radagast, the Brown.”

[Bilbo:] “Is he a great Wizard or is he...more like you?”

[Gandalf looks slightly offended.]

[Gandalf:] “I think he’s a very great wizard, in his own way. He’s a gentle soul who prefers the company of animals to others. He keeps a watchful eye over the vast forest lands to the East, and a good thing too, for always Evil will look to find a foothold in this world.”

So here may I present Radagast the Brown... the Limited Edition figure from the Starter Hobbit boxed set...

I never really knew how to imagine Radagast, but I think PJ has done a wonderful visualization of the character and the choice of Sylvestor McCoy for the role is inspired...

I loved the initial scenes as he tries to save Sebastian, as the spiders rampage over his home of Rosgobel...

As for the rabbit pulled sleigh, at first thought its utter nonsense, and yet it just works so well... about as far from the canon as you could get, but I love it, and have ordered the model... :-)

As for this model, its great to see what wonderful poses can be achieved using plastic - Yes its a plastic figure!

I used various references for colours choices, both painted versions I have seen in the Rulebook and websites and going off the movie companion book I have... I also kept the colour choices written down so when the sleigh arrives I can uses the same ones again!

In the game, Radagast plays much as he did before, under the new Hobbit rules, but can be upgraded to take both the sleigh and Sebastian - simply charming!

So, that marks the completion of the painting of all the figures from the Starter boxed set. It only leaves the Goblin town terrain, though I am not in a huge hurry to paint this, as I earlier made my own Goblin town setting...

So whats next? I am busy painting up the Trolls; Bert Tom and Bill, and have just about finished my Hobbit Ale Cart having added the reigns last night - fiddly but I got there in the end...

I am also trying to clear my painting table of a past partially completed project ; 34 Warriors of Minas Tirith... it was easy starting them off with a blast of silver from the airbrush but they have languished since - must get them finished for some scrapping in Osgiliath!

Stay tuned for more...
